Classical Repertoire Database
We have separated the classical repertoire database into seven levels in order of increasing difficulty. There are several factors involved in determining the technical and musical level of any work. Those factors include the rhythm background, theoretical knowledge, right-hand and left-hand techniques, kinesthetic and aural-memory skills of each player, as well as the pieces that are suitable for his or her abilities. The order of the pieces within each level, therefore, is not necessarily the order that each player will follow in his or her course of study. Consult your teacher to find out if the piece(s) that you would like to learn is at a suitable level for your abilities. More importantly, keep in mind that the Los Angeles Guitar Academy advocates a multi-layered learning process as opposed to a linear one. This means that the pieces that you learn aurally (by ear, using your kinesthetic memory) will probably be chosen from a higher level than those that you are learning by reading notes. For example, your teacher might assign you to learn a piece aurally which is at a Level Four or Level Five, even though you might still be reading music at a Level Two or Level Three. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask your teacher to clarify this important concept.
